Who we are

Jonathan A. Stein

A recognized authority in the automotive world, Jonathan Stein has spent more than 45 years immersed in collector car culture. Highlights of his career include:

  • Automobile Quarterly (1988–2000)
Stein joined Automobile Quarterly after writing numerous articles over an eight-year span. During his 12-year tenure, he guided the company, led special historical projects, and wrote and edited hundreds of articles.

  • Bentley Publishers (2001–2005)
As an acquisition editor, Stein built upon his expertise in commissioning, editing, and publishing major automotive works, further refining his editorial vision.

  • Hagerty (2005–2023)
While at Hagerty, Stein co-founded Hagerty Magazine, leading it for a decade. Under his direction, the magazine developed its unique voice, grew an engaged readership, and produced high-quality content for car enthusiasts worldwide.

Independently, Stein has edited numerous books, written exhibit materials for museums, and consulted for collectors and restoration shops on matters of authenticity. He has also been a sought-after concours judge for 45 years, including 27 at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, as well as appearances at Villa d’Este, Lugano, The Louis Vuitton Classic, Meadow Brook, and Amelia Island.

Merkel

Merkel is an eight-year-old Cavoodle/Cavapoo named for the legendary Flying Merkel motorcycle, whose signature orange hue echoes her own coat. While she’s a quiet partner in business dealings, Merkel’s energy and spirit leave a lasting impression. A native of Warsaw, Wisconsin, Merkel truly lived up to her “Flying Merkel” moniker when she flew home with Stein.
